Basically after the river you can find yourself in two situations: you have the best hand or not. At this point you cannot do anything to improve your hand, but the outcome may be influenced by how you play. A good player can win a hand although his opponent has better cards. Usually in real money poker on medium and high stakes just two or three players get to the river. On lower stakes the game is looser so the number of players seeing the river could be higher. The more players get to see the flop, turn and river, the smaller are each player’s chances to win the pot. That’s why in low stakes online poker the luck could be more important than skill.

On medium and high stakes poker, if you get to the river and you have the best possible hand things are quite clear. You must bet, to try and get more money from your opponent. If your opponent is a tight player you should place a small bet that he might call. It is known that tight players do not call large bets unless they have really strong hands.

If your chances to win are small and you suspect that the other player has a better hand you should check and fold at the first bet. Don’t push your luck or you might feel dory later.

A very important aspect to consider while preparing your hand strategy is the opponent’s game. If you pay attention at his game you can guess how strong his hand is and this way play yours more profitable.

Many players that get to the river having practically nothing are tempted to bluff and they lose. To win a bluff you need to play it correctly from the flop or even pre-flop or else everyone will know you are just bluffing.
